What makes a fish “Kosher”?
In order for a fish to be a “Certified Kosher Fish” it must meet the following broad qualifications:
- The fish must have “fins” and “scales” (a list of “Kosher” fish species)
- The fish should be processed using kosher equipment and utensils. This requires the supervision of a trusted Kashrus Organization.
- Upon regulating, observing and overseeing processes and operations, The Kashrus Organization provides a “Hechsher.” A Hechsher is a special certification marking/symbol that can be found on the food product packaging or product label. This symbol confirms that the sealed contents within have been certified as Kosher, meaning “fit” for consumption.
